The Maddogs carried the
momentum of last week’s win over Amherst into their game against UConn
Sunday night, defeating the Huskies 20-5. The unconventional Sunday night
contest was played in the drizzle and cold under the lights at Parson’s
field.
From the opening kickoff it was obvious that the conditions would play a major part in the match. Early dropped balls due to the wetness and offside penalties created an erratic flow for the first 15 minutes of the game. Northeastern maintained their poise as the Maddog pack controlled the larger UConn forwards in the scrums. Hooker David Carmichael opened up the scoring midway through the half with a score on the left side of the try zone.
After a score by eight-man Mike Bruce with just over 10 minutes to play, the Maddogs received a team yellow card for too many offside penalties, and Flanker Tommy Nardin was sent off for the remainder of the half. The Dogs held UConn off the scoreboard and went into the half up 10-0.
Northeastern kept it going in the second half as Ben Miller brought the score to 13-0 with a penalty kick from just over 10 yards out. The forwards carried the day scoring once more on a Mike Pannone try. Miller added the conversion to make the score 20-0 with just over 5 minutes to play. UConn was able to score as time ran out bringing the final score to 20-5.
Northeastern travels to Northfield, Vermont this Saturday in a battle for second place to take on fellow 2-1 Norwich University.
