Maddogs Drop Season Finale at UConn

Thursday October 20, 2005
By Ross Shepard

The rain held off this week, but Northeastern was unable to hold off the Huskies at Depot Campus pitch. The University of Connecticut took the match 17-7.

UConn drew first blood, kicking for points in the early going. The Maddogs answered right back with some swift ball movement in the back line and a try between the posts. Although the Dogs spent a lot of time in UConn territory, it would be their only score of the game.

From kickoff until the final whistle was blown, this was a hard-hitting matchup. The Huskies decided to keep the ball in the forwards' hands for most of the game, frustrating the Northeastern defense. The Maddog pack put up a strong effort again, allowing only a couple of meters each time the Husky forwards advanced the ball. The Northeastern scrums were also solid despite the muddy field conditions.

At the half the score was 10-7 in favor of the home team, but it was evident that the Maddogs needed to adjust their gameplan to compensate for UConn's style of play. These changes kept the Huskies from running away with the game, and it was a string of unlucky passes and a momentary lack of focus that allowed them to score again.

The Maddogs finished the regular season with a 2-3 record and will head back to Boston unsure of their playoff fate.
