Maddogs Battle the Elements at Army
Thursday October 13, 2005
By Ross Shepard
Northeastern lost to undefeated Army this Saturday 41-3, evening out their record at 2-2. The conditions were no help in the Maddogs' push against the West Point club, as torrential downpours slowed play considerably and caused flash flooding on the Army campus.
Army controlled the ball and the field position for the majority of the game, but the bright spots for the visiting Maddogs came with the kicking game and a few solid runs by the backs. Unfortunately Northeastern was unable to tie phases together, but did manage a kick for points just before the half. The clubs entered the break with Army on top 24-3.
The Dogs came out with conviction after halftime, but could not hold off the Black Knights' attack. The Northeastern forwards again held their own in the scrums but uncharacteristically lost many lineouts, one resulting in a maul which lead to an eventual Army try.
Despite the sloppy conditions there were few dropped balls. One botched pass, however, did lead to the final Army score and the Black Knights ran away with the victory.
After the game the Army ruggers offered the Maddogs a warm shower and food on the historic West Point campus. Much thanks to the club for their hospitality.
This Saturday the Dogs are back on the road at the University of Connecticut. The kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. This is a huge game for Northeastern, as a victory means the final playoff spot in the NERFU White league. Alumni, parents, and fans are urged to come out and support the Maddogs!
