Loyal fans braved the cold and wind to watch their beloved Maddogs end their hopes for a trip to the national Sweet Sixteen tournament. The Dogs played tough games against Cornell University and Norwich University, losing to both in the semi-finals on the fields of UMass Amherst.
It was a brilliant season for the Maddogs, who played their hearts out week after week to give us one exciting win after another. We watched in awe as the powerful Maddog scrums overpowered their opponents. We screamed with delight every time a Dog would pound the ball down in the try zone to score. We applauded the kickers each time they improved our field position, or scored a penalty kick or conversion goal. We howled every time a mighty Maddog slammed an opponent to the turf. We held our breaths in the line-outs, eventually cheering as the Maddog players gained control of the ball.
All in all, the Maddogs earned our respect both on and off the field. Coach Sean O’Leary’s expectations were high, and therefore, so were ours. We weren’t disappointed. He insisted that his players work hard, elevate their level of play, take the high road, and conduct themselves as representatives of Northeastern University Maddog Rugby Football Club should. And they did just that.
So the season comes to an end. The Dogs, however, aren’t looking back. Plans are already underway to train for what they know will be an incredible spring rugby season. Until then, thank you, Northeastern University Maddogs, for an outstanding season. Thank you, alumni and fans, for your unending support. We look forward to seeing you in the spring, so watch for our spring schedule. Until then, as always…GO MADDOGS!
