Like a fine Irish stout, the Northeastern University Maddogs treated fans to a smooth start and a strong finish to beat Harvard University 18-8 before a sizeable crowd at the Harvard pitch. It was an important win for the undefeated Maddogs, who gained a home field advantage in the upcoming playoffs with the win against the Crimson.
As in previous contests the mighty Maddogs came out impressively, scoring a try in the first two minutes of the game. The Beanpot rivals bashed it out until a penalty was called on the Crimson, enabling the Dogs to tack on another three points with a successful penalty kick to lead 8-0. Soon after, the tables were turned, with the Crimson racking up their first three points of the game on a penalty kick. Score at the half…Northeastern 8, Harvard 3.
At the beginning of the second half the Crimson threatened the Dogs, scoring a try to tie the game 8-8. Unfortunately for the Crimson, they began to pale, and would not score again for the remainder of the game. The hale and hearty Maddogs, however, could taste the win, and it was full steam ahead with two more tries. Final score: Northeastern 18, Harvard 8.
After the A-side won, the devoted Maddog fans were thirsty for more, and B-side did not disappoint them. Once again, B-side annihilated their opponents in a fast-paced and exciting game.
As far as field conditions go, it was one of the worst this season. The previous night’s rain filled the potholes with mud, and the irregular grade in the turf made it difficult on both the running and kicking games for both teams.
