It was like clockwork…you could sit back, set your stopwatch and watch the Dogs score. That’s how it was during the first half of an exciting home opener at Madison Park, as the Northeastern University Maddogs pounced on opponent Amherst College with a score every ten minutes before a crowd of enthusiastic fans.
The Maddogs came out strong as they scored a try and a conversion goal just 10 minutes into the game. Amherst didn’t have the ball long before the Dogs overpowered them to score again with another try at the 20 minute mark. The pumped-up fans and sideline howled as the Dogs pummeled Amherst with another try and a conversion goal at 30 minutes, and a try at 40 minutes. It appeared that Amherst might leave the field scoreless, but seconds before the end of the half they managed to pull out a try and a conversion goal for a score of 24-7 at the end of the half.
Under a blistering sun the second half started out like the first, with the Dogs dominating the field, scoring a try and a conversion goal within the first 10 minutes. Moments later the Dogs scored another try and a conversion goal. Under pressure, Amherst responded by scoring a try, their last of the game. With seconds remaining the Dogs threatened to hammer Amherst again just as the whistle blew to end the game for a final score of 38-12.
Once again the Maddogs overwhelmed their opponents while running the ball, in the scrums, and in the line outs.
As the Rolling Stones classic goes, “time…is on my side, yes it is.” And so it was for the Northeastern University Maddogs...time was definitely on their side as they clocked Amherst and chalked up another victory to remain undefeated.
