Maddogs Open up Spring Season
Monday March 26, 2007
By: Lilliam Wong
The Maddogs opened their spring season this weekend
with games against Coast Guard, Wentworth and Springfield. On Saturday the
Maddogs traveled to New London, CT to take on the USCGA. Northeastern put
a very young first 15 out against the reigning Division II National Champions
and their inexperience showed early. Numerous off sides penalties put NU on
their heels defensively and allowed Coast Guard to gain excellent field position.
Coast Guard took advantage gaining an 18-0 lead less than 20 minutes into
the game. After their poor performance in the first half the Maddogs were
able to improve their structure and discipline in the second half. Fewer penalties
and increased communication on defense saw a much more balanced game. Northeastern
gained valuable experience in their first outdoor action of the year.
Final Score: Coast Guard 38 Northeastern
5
Sunday night marked the start of the inaugural
Spring Shorties Tournament for the Northeastern B/C Side. The Maddogs hosted
Wentworth and Springfield’s A sides at Parsons Field. In their first
game the Maddogs played Springfield. The game was a defensive battle early
on and the score after the first 25 minutes was 0-0. Coming out of the half
the Maddogs pushed Springfield deep into their own territory and put a try
down in the left corner to go up 5-0. Springfield answered right back, however,
with a pair a tries late to take the match 10-5.
Final Score: Springfield 10 Northeastern
5
In the second game Northeastern faced Wentworth.
It was the second match of the night for both clubs and fatigue looked like
it might be an issue early on. A number of balls were knocked on and the flow
of the game was very stagnant. Wentworth was able to score first with two
tries in the first half to take a 12-0 lead into halftime. The second half
saw Wentworth score another quick try to go up 17-0 before the Maddogs got
their second wind. With less than 15 minutes to play Northeastern was able
to score twice to bring the match to 17-10. Wentworth added another try late
to make the final score 22-10.
Final Score: Wentworth 22 Northeastern
10
Although the Maddogs B/C sides came away winless they improved greatly over the course of their two games against two college's first sides.
