Maddogs Complete Homecoming Sweep
Tuesday October 24, 2006
By Lilliam Wong
The Northeastern Maddogs took the field Saturday night against UNH on the heels of the football team’s overtime upset of the #6 ranked Wildcats. With emotions running high on Homecoming Weekend the Maddogs struck early. A score to the right of the posts off a ruck gave Northeastern a quick 5-0 lead.
The Maddogs continued their impressive play for the remainder of the first half with tremendous open field passing and support runs. A number of tries were scored on offloads and dummy passes which kept the Wildcat side on their heels.
The first half came to a close with the Maddogs leading 45-0.
The second half began slowly for Northeastern as multiple diving over and offside penalties allowed UNH to maintain possession for their longest duration of the night. Keyed by two consecutive penalties from within their own 10 meter line, Northeastern gave up what would be their only score of the night. UNH missed the conversion making the score 45-5.
Following this defensive letdown, the Maddogs were injected with a renewed energy and the remainder of the game was played on the UNH side of the field. Northeastern added 4 more tries in the second frame bringing the final score to 65-5.
The loss demotes UNH to Division II next fall and insures the Maddogs are one of 8 teams remaining in Division I.
Northeastern, now 4-2,
takes on rival Dartmouth this Saturday at Parson’s
Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
